Management of Sleep Apnea at Team Reconface

Sleep apnea is a serious sleep disorder characterized by repeated pauses in breathing during sleep. Team Reconface is dedicated to providing comprehensive management strategies for sleep apnea, ensuring optimal care and improved sleep quality for our patients. Our approach involves a multidisciplinary team, including oral and maxillofacial surgeons, sleep specialists, and other healthcare professionals.

Management Options:

  1. Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP):

    • CPAP is a common and effective treatment for sleep apnea. It involves wearing a mask over the nose and/or mouth during sleep, delivering a continuous stream of air to keep the airway open.
  2. Oral Appliances:

    • Customized oral appliances, such as mandibular advancement devices, can be provided. These devices help reposition the jaw and tongue to prevent airway obstruction.
  3. Surgical Interventions:

    • Surgical options may be considered in cases where non-invasive treatments are not effective. Procedures may include uvulopalatopharyngoplasty (UPPP), genioglossus advancement (GA), or maxillomandibular advancement (MMA) to address anatomical issues.
  4. Weight Management:

    • For individuals with obesity-related sleep apnea, weight loss through a combination of diet and exercise may be recommended to reduce symptoms.
  5. Positional Therapy:

    • Some individuals experience sleep apnea primarily when sleeping in certain positions. Positional therapy involves techniques or devices to encourage sleeping in positions that minimize airway obstruction.
  6. Lifestyle Modifications:

    • Advising patients to avoid alcohol and sedatives, quit smoking, and maintain a regular sleep schedule can contribute to the management of sleep apnea.
  7. Behavioral Therapies:

    • Behavioral interventions, such as positional therapy, cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia (CBT-I), or other sleep hygiene practices, may be incorporated into the treatment plan.
  8. Collaborative Care:

    • Our team collaborates with sleep specialists, respiratory therapists, and other healthcare professionals to ensure a comprehensive and individualized approach to sleep apnea management.

Treatment Process:

  1. Comprehensive Sleep Evaluation:

    • A thorough evaluation, including sleep studies (polysomnography), is conducted to diagnose the severity and type of sleep apnea.
  2. Consultation and Treatment Planning:

    • Patients are actively involved in the consultation process, where treatment options, potential benefits, and potential side effects are discussed.
  3. CPAP Titration and Oral Appliance Fitting:

    • For CPAP, titration studies help determine the optimal air pressure. For oral appliances, custom fittings are done to ensure comfort and effectiveness.
  4. Surgical Planning (if necessary):

    • Surgical interventions are planned based on the specific anatomical factors contributing to sleep apnea. Patients are informed about the procedures, risks, and expected outcomes.
  5. Follow-Up and Monitoring:

    • Regular follow-up appointments are scheduled to monitor the effectiveness of the chosen treatment and make any necessary adjustments.

Common symptoms include loud snoring, choking or gasping during sleep, excessive daytime sleepiness, and difficulty concentrating. A sleep study is typically required for diagnosis.

CPAP is a highly effective treatment, but oral appliances and surgical interventions may be suitable for some individuals. The choice depends on the severity and specific characteristics of sleep apnea.

While lifestyle changes, such as weight loss and avoiding certain substances, can contribute to improved sleep, they may not be sufficient for everyone, especially in moderate to severe cases.

Many individuals experience immediate improvements in sleep quality and daytime alertness with CPAP or oral appliances. However, individual responses may vary.

Some individuals may explore positional therapy, positional devices, or acupuncture as complementary approaches. However, the effectiveness of these alternatives varies, and consultation with a healthcare professional is advised.
